All events will be held at the Stadium Leisure Club (unless otherwise stated)
Kevin Grenfell's Jazz Giants
For the fourth time in under a year Kevin Grenfell will play trombone or trumpet (or both) at Nottingham. He's been here with his Jazz Giants, with the Dart Valley Stompers and, only a couple of weeks ago, with Richard Leach's Seven Stars of Jazz. This time it will be a return of his own Jazz Giants to see the start of our 2020 season. As we will be featuring several new bands (to us) in the next three months, we decided to kick off with one of our regulars. Personnel should be the same as last September: Jeremy Huggett on reeds will join Kevin on trumpet and trombone in the front line and the support will come from Phil Nice on piano, Simon Smith on bass and another regular to the club, Baby Jools on drums.
A Happy New Year to you all and we hope to see you to get our new year off to a good start.
Frog & Henry
Tenement Jazz Band
We're making a real effort to bring to the club some of the really exciting young bands which will be the future of traditional jazz in this country. Those of you who were at the Frog and Henry session will have had your first thrill. On 20th February you will get the chance to see a very different band. A five piece group from Edinburgh, very much in the New Orleans style playing with all the enthusiasm you could ask for. Catch them on Youtube then come to see them in the flesh.
Fri28Feb20201:00 pmFollowing the AGM (12pm)
We have put on lunchtime jazz sessions several times and the poor attendances have shown these have limited attraction. However, our members turn out for our AGM in strong numbers and they present a captive audience for a lunchtime do. As we have shown before, Washington Whirligig always give us a happy couple of hours of jazz.
Members only for the AGM but the music will start directly after for members and guests alike. Great value for a fiver!
The Jazz Buddies
For those of you who have an old schedule of events, please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, the Vitality Five will now be appearing in November and the Jazz Buddies will take the March date. Surprisingly it is nearly five years since we last saw this band in Nottingham, really! The front line stays the same, Arthur Brown on trumpet, Mike Owen on trombone and our own Matt Palmer on reeds. Brian Mellor on banjo and guitar, who missed the last session, Simon Smith on bass and Tim Jones on drums will have the job of driving this exciting band. After two really young bands (under 50s), we are back to the veterans again (over 50s) with all their experience and enthusiasm. Come and enjoy!
